This series is played between India and Australia. It is played in test series format. These tournaments are managed and organised by Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). It is an organisation who has the rights to govern the Cricket in India, under the supervision the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports and in the supervision of Australia cricket.
In 1996-1997, the first edition was played, and it resulted in a win for India. The latest edition was hosted by Australia in 2020-2021 and the series was won by India. The next upcoming series between India and Australia will be played in 2022-2023 and it will be hosted by India.
Only two International teams are the part of this Border Gavaskar Trophy.
The two Legends- Allan Border from Australia and Sunil Gavaskar from India. These two names have been very popular in their time for creating a historical record in the game of cricket. Giving this Legend a Tribute by naming the series by their name.
Since 1996, most series run scored by Sachin Tendulkar 3262 runs and most series wickets taken by Anil Kumble 111 wickets.
Before the commencement of Border Gavaskar Trophy, India and Australia both played with each other from 1947, just after independence till 1996.
Australia was the only country to tour India just after independence.

The matches between India & Australia have always been very interesting and competitive. The main motive of Australian’s was to defeat India in there home soil. But on other hand, India has made a very tough competition to beat them at home. India have only lost two series in year 1986-87 and even never won any series until 2018-19 vs Australia.
But after that till date 2020-2021, they kept the winning enthusiasm and also retained the winning trophy for last two series outside home. India and Australia played a very competitive matches in 2000-1 and 2007-8, in which India ended up winning against Australia.
The title Final Frontier was used in 2000-2001 series. The three campions Harbhajan Singh, Matthew Hayden, Laxman who were less popular that time, but the duel between Laxman and Australian bowler and secondly Harbhajan and Hayden were the deadliest rivalry in the test series.

1996-1997 Series
In 1996-1997 edition, the series was hosted by India and India won the series. Nayan Mongia was played in the series. It was the very first Test match played under Border Gavaskar Trophy. Sachin Tendulkar became the first captain of this series. The matches were played at Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium/Arun Jaitley in Delhi.
1997-1998 Series
In1997-1998 edition, it was again hosted by India and again won by India, in which Sachin Tendulkar was player of the series. At the end of the series, Shane Warne was just thinking that he would be having nightmares of Sachin hitting him with huge sixes.
1999-2000 Series
In 1999-2000, Australia won the series despite Sachin Tendulkar hitting a century and Sachin Tendulkar was also awarded the Player of the series.
In 2001 series, India hosted the series and won by India and Harbhajan Singh was played in the series. Total three test series were played in Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai. Australia won the first match and took a phenomenal lead of 1-0 in the three test series.
Australia played really well on the first test. Second test was played at Eden Gardens Kolkata and in which Harbhajan Singh tool 7 wickets including a hat trick and made a comeback to the series and levelled it by 1-1.
The third test was played at Chennai again Harbhajan Singh took 7 wickets along with making the final winning score and made India win their third test and won the series by 2-1.
2003-2004 Series
In 2003-2004, the series was hosted by Australia and the match got drawn and India retained the trophy due their previous win and player of the series was Rahul Dravid. Before this tour, India had a very poor record in a test match in away grounds and since 1981 India never won the test match in Australia.
In 2004, India hosted the series and Australia won the series and Damien Martyn was a player of the series. Bangalore, Chennai, Nagpur and Mumbai were selected as the top venues for the Test series. Australians came with the thought of winning it and forgetting all the past,
2007-2008 Series
In 2007-2008, Australia hosted the matches and won by Australia and Brett Lee stood for played of the series. Sourav Ganguly had his last play against Australia before his retirement in which India toured Australia. It was a four test match series played in Australia at Melbourne, Sydney, Perth and Adelaide cricket ground. And Australia won the series by 2-1.
In 2008, India hosted the series and won by India, the player of the series goes to Ishant Sharma. It was the first match played at Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bangalore. The match ended with a draw.
Sachin Tendulkar was the player of the series in the 2010 series and helped India in winning the series.
2011-2012 Series
In 2011-2012, series was hosted by Australia and won by Australia, player of the match won by Michael Clark.
2013 Series
In 2013 edition Australia won the series. Player of the series was Ravichandran Ashwin.
2014-2015 Series
In 2014-2015, the series was played at Australia and won by Australia too and Steve Smith was the player of the series.
In 2017, India hosted the event and won by Indians. Player of the match was Ravindra Jadeja.
2018-2019 Series
2018-2019 edition was hosted by Australia and won by India, Ravindra Jadeja and won the player of the series was Cheteshwar Pujara.
2020-2021 Series
The latest edition in2020- 2021, Australia hosted the event and won by India.
