Indian premier league (IPL) is the most popular T20 league, especially in India. The first edition was played in 2008. These tournaments are managed and organized by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

It is an organization that has the right to govern the Cricket in India, under the supervision of the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports. Wankhede Stadium Mumbai is the headquarter of BCCI. BCCI was founded and got registered under the Tamil Nadu Societies Registration Act in the year 1928.

The IPL is played in T20 format. This tournament has a tentative schedule to be conducted around the month of March to May. A total of eight teams participate and they represent their respective cities & States in India. The first edition of IPL was played in 2008 and the latest tournament has been played in 2020.

IPL attracts a large amount of audience and, in 2014, IPL ranked sixth by average attendance as compared to all the other sports leagues in the world. IPL was live telecasted on YouTube in the 2010 edition. IPL gained a brand value of Rs 475 Billion in 2019.

BCCI confirmed that the 2015 IPL season contributed Rs. 11.5 Billion to the GDP of the Indian Economy. There has been a total of thirteen IPL season tournaments until 2020. Mumbai Indians are the current Title holder. The 2020 tournament was to be played and hosted by India but could not happen because of Covid-19 and was played in the United Arab Nations.

Indian Premier League (IPL): History

Earlier, there was the Indian Cricket League (ICL) in 2007, which was funded by Zee Entertainment Enterprises. Both, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the International Cricket Council (ICC) were not to support ICL. BCCI also increased the price of money for its own domestic tournament.

On 13 September 2007, there was an announcement by BCCI to involve the franchise-based T20 tournament and named it the Indian Premier League. In the first edition of IPL in 2008, there was a high-class opening ceremony took place in New Delhi. Lalit Modi had a great idea behind this tournament.

He gave all the details regarding the tournament, its format, prizes, awards, franchises, rules, and regulations. It was decided that the IPL committee would run by total seven members, which will include the former Indian players and BCCI officials.

The team which gains the first and second spot gets the place to play in the Champions Trophy. Lalit Modi is the mastermind of introducing and running this successful tournament, IPL, for almost two years.

Also, the premier league played in England and the NBA in the United States is like this league. Since IPL started in India, it gained more and more sponsors and it gained lots of audiences, as this game of cricket is full of entertainment.

Further, the owners of the particular teams for the league were to be decided. The auction took place on 24 January 2008. The base price for the franchise was $400 million. After the Auction, the bidders as well the cities or state teams will be based on were decided. Bangalore, Delhi, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Kolkata, Chennai, Mohali, and Mumbai.

Indian Premier League (IPL): Expansion

The two new team were introduced in the 2010 edition. Pune Warriors India and Kochi Tuskers Kerala. These both teams join the league in 2011 tournament. After one year of play, Kochi Tuskers Kerala’s contract got cancelled due to breaching the BCCIs rule & regulations.

In 2012, the champions of 2009 edition, Deccan Chargers, were terminated. And then the IPL committee was in search of a new franchise. The auction was organised and the new franchises came and joined the League. It was Sunrisers Hyderabad. Pune Warriors were terminated by BCCI in 2013.

In 2015, Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals both teams were suspended for two years due to their match-fixing and Betting Scandal. Two new teams Rising Pune Supergiant and Gujarat Lions replaced two teams, Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals, in the 2015 auction of IPL.

Tournament Format

All the teams play with each other in a round-robin format, which gives the perfect team for the Eliminator and Qualifier and the Finals. All the teams get the chance to play one in-home ground and another away. And the top four qualified teams will play the playoff in the tournament.

The top two teams will be the first qualifier and whichever team wins directly goes to the finals, and the loser gets the chance to play the second qualifier.

Whereas, the third and fourth team plays the eliminator, in which the winner gets the chance to play with the loser of the first qualifying match and the loser of eliminator match is moved out of the tournament.

The winner moves to the finals and finally whichever team wins is crowned with the IPL trophy and awards.

Indian Premier League (IPL): Results and Awards

Out of total thirteen teams since the beginning, the Mumbai Indians have won the tournament five times, Chennai Super Kings have won the competition thrice and the Kolkata Knight Riders have won it twice. Mumbai Indians win the IPL title for five times and are termed the most successful team in IPL so far.

Other than these teams, Rajasthan Royals, Deccan Chargers, and Sun Risers Hyderabad have won the tournament. Mumbai Indians are termed as most successful team of IPL for winning the IPL title for five times. It’s a great achievement.

Most Tournaments Runs scored by Virat Kohli- 5878 runs. Most Tournament wickets Lasith Malinga- 170 wickets.

Orange Cap

The player who scores most runs in a particular season till the finals is awarded with the orange cap. Current Winner- K. L. Rahul (2020).

Purple Cap

The most wicket-taker throughout the season till finals is awarded with the purple cap. Current Winner- Kagiso Rabada (2020)

A most valuable player or Man of the Tournament- Jofra Archer (2020)

They give fair play awards to the team based on the points given by the match referee or the Umpires. The performance of both the teams is recorded by them and then they decide on the winner. Current winner- Mumbai Indians.

Emerging Player of the year- Devdutt Padikkal (2020)

Most Sixes Award- It is given to the batsman who hist most sixes in the tournament. Ishan Kishan (2020)

Player of the match- Trent Boult (2020)
