The Champions League Twenty20 is also commonly known as CLT20. It is a tournament held annually on the International level between top teams of major Cricketing nations. They launched this tournament in the year 2008. The first tournament of this champion’s league CLT20 was to be played in 2008, but because of the Mumbai attack in the same year, the tournament got canceled.

After that, the tournament occurred in 2009 and was hosted by India. The latest Champions League Twenty20 tournament was played in 2014 in India. It’s a 20-20 format league. BCCI, Cricket Australia, and Cricket South Africa manage and organize these champions league CLT20 tournaments jointly.

The Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Champions League Twenty20 and the Indian Premier League is Mr. Sundar Raman. The tournament used to take place during September and October month, which is played for two to three weeks. Either India or South Africa majorly hosted the tournament.

The total prize money of the league is USD 6 Million, in which the winning team will receive USD 2.5 Million, which was the highest prize money in the club’s history in the cricket tournament. These tournaments show the good enthusiasm amongst each team.

Every team member and the player tries to put on their best performance for their team and for their respective nations. The best teams from the eight test-playing nations take part in this format. After the latest tournament happed in 2014, the three cricket boards decided and announced that, due to lack of audience interest, poor viewership, improper sponsorships, and many other factors, the league will be disposed and the 2014 Champions Leagues Twenty20 was the last tournament.

Champions League Twenty20: Format

In this league, all the tournaments had a different format and also different taking parts in nations. They played it in a round-robin and knockout format. The teams from India, South Africa, and Australia get direct entrance and others need to play the qualification matches, which were introduced in 2011.

The total prize money was set at around USD 6 million and it is distributed as USD 2.5 million to the winner, USD 1.3 million to the runner-up, USD 500,000 to the second and third runner-up, USD 200,000 to the teams eliminated in the group stage. Each team must have 15 players in the squad, before the commencement of the tournament. They changed the format of the tournament in 2011, including the fourth IPL team and the elimination of weaker teams.

The same rule applies to IPL. Each team may play only four international players. In 2011, there was an exceptional case with the Mumbai Indians, because the players were not available and because of the unavailable of players, they could not make their playing eleven.

So, they got special permission to go with five international players and the Mumbai Indians were the winner of the Champions League Twenty20.

Champions League Twenty20: Impact

They provided strong funds for the conduct of the tournament. The price of money was USD 6 million, which was declared the largest prize money in any tournament. The tournament’s broadcasting partner was ESPN Star Sports, which paid USD900 million for ten years. In 2009, Bharti Airtel bought the title sponsorship for USD 40 million.

They mainly targeted the tournament to the Indian audience. All the seasons have more teams from India than any other country. In the 2011 tournament, there were four teams played whereas other countries had only two teams max. Amongst all the nations, India is the first choice for the conducting and hosting of the tournament.

While the format of the tournament has not changed, the qualification tournament has changed just due to include more and more foreign players for stronger teams. These T20 series got famous around the globe.

There was an inaugural series in 2009 in India with a very less audience, which showed a lack of interest in the tournament, very low attendance, and low TV rating. The TAM media have done the research and found that the rating point was 1.06, which was much lesser than the ratings of the Indian Premier League was 4.1.

Bharti Airtel ended its contract of five years in just two years. After that, Nokia came and replaced Airtel. Nokia signed a four-year contract, which ended in just one year. Karbonn replaced Nokia in 2012. After 2014, the OPPO remained as a title sponsor.

After seeking such a drastic change in the tournament, members tried to do something special for the comeback of the tournament. There were many advertisements on television, featuring Bollywood actor- Shahrukh Khan as a brand ambassador and also included the international hip-hop stars at the opening ceremony.

The 2010 tournament, which was held in South Africa, improved to 1.45. They changed the format of the tournament in 2011, including the fourth IPL team and the elimination of weaker teams. The 2011 tournament reported a minor increase in ratings of 1.64.

Champions League Twenty20: Result

In 2008, India hosted the tournament, the match venue was MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai, and unfortunately, the tournament could not take place because of the Mumbai Attack. Further, it was decided to host the tournament in 2009, again in India at Rajiv Gandhi International. Cricket Stadium, Hyderabad, and won by New South Wales Blues.

2010 tournament was hosted by South Africa, at New Wanderers Stadium, Johannesburg, and won by Chennai Super Kings. In 2011, it was hosted by India at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai, and won by Chennai Super Kings. 2013 event was hosted by India at Feroz Shah Kotla Ground, New Delhi and the winner was the Mumbai Indians.

In 2013, the host country was India, and matches were played at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bangalore, and won by Chennai Super Kings. Each player comes to the field, whether it’s a batsman, all-rounder, or bowler, with full confidence and magnificent presence of mind.

Every player has the motive of scoring and contributing to the team. The cricket tournaments show good enthusiasm amongst each team.

Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians have won the tournament twice. Suresh, Raina’s 842 runs have scored the most Tournament Runs. Most tournament wickets by Sunil Narine are 39 wickets.
