                The Delhi Capitals is an IPL franchise cricket team of Delhi in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The Delhi Capitals was founded in 2008 as the Delhi Daredevils. The GMR Group and the JSW Group own the franchise together. The Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi is the home ground of the Delhi Capitals.

The Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Cricket Stadium in Raipur serves as the Delhi Capitals’ secondary home ground. The nickname of the team is DD from 2008 to 2018 and now it’s DC. GMR Group, a property development company, invested $84 million for the Delhi team. GMR sold a 50% share in the Delhi Daredevils to JSW Sports in March 2018 for US$77 million.

Delhi Capitals IPL Journey

            In the 2008 IPL season, the Delhi Capitals defeated the Rajasthan Royals and the Deccan Chargers in their first two games. After losing to Kings XI Punjab, the Delhi Capitals team went on to win their next two consecutive matches played against the RCB and the CSK.

            In the 2009 IPL season, The Delhi Capitals dominated for most of the 2009 IPL season, finishing at the top of the table. The Delhi Capitals got a great batting line up including Sehwag, AB de Villiers, Dilshan, Manoj Tiwari, Aaron Finch, Glenn Maxwell and Manish Pandey. The bowling line-up includes Daniel Vettori, Amit Mishra, Pradeep Sangwan, Ashish Nehra and Dirk Nannes. Despite finishing first in the points table during the regular season, the Delhi Capitals were defeated in the semi-finals by Deccan Chargers. The Deccan Chargers captain, Adam Gilchrist, scored an unbeaten fastest 50 in IPL history (in just 17 balls). Delhi Capitals was unable to compete in the final due to the semi-final defeat.

            Now heading to the 2012 IPL season, following a disappointing 2011 season in which they finished third, the Delhi Capitals showed a different edge. The Delhi Capitals won 11 of the 16 matches, played in the league stage of the IPL, and topped the point table. However, it lost all of its playoff matches and ended in third position.

            The Delhi Capitals lost their first six IPL 2013 games before winning their first match against the Mumbai Indians in the seventh. Following this contest, they faced the Kings XI Punjab and were defeated once more. However, they won their ninth match of the season against the Pune Warriors, moving them up to the eighth position in the points table. They beat the Kolkata Knight Riders by seven wickets in their tenth match. Following this contest, they faced the Sunrisers Hyderabad and the Rajasthan Royals and were defeated once more. The Delhi Capitals was formally excluded from the 2013 season as a result of this defeat.

            In 2014, the Delhi Capitals had yet another disappointing season. They lost their first game against the Royal Challengers Bangalore, but won their next game against the Kolkata Knight Riders. This was followed by a defeat against the Chennai Super Kings, and a near defeat against the Sunrisers Hyderabad. The Delhi Capitals defeated the Mumbai Indians in their next encounter. When the tournament was moved from the temporary venue in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to India, Delhi Capitals went on to lose their next nine matches. The Delhi Capitals won just two of their fourteen matches. The Delhi Capitals finished last once more.

            In the 2015 edition of the IPL, the team finished seventh. Owing to a series of disappointing results over the previous two years, they faced harsh criticism from Delhi fans.

            In the 2016 IPL season, former Indian pacer Zaheer Khan was named as the new captain of the Delhi Capitals. The Delhi Capitals improved their play compared to the previous three seasons. After losing their first match to the KKR, the Capitals went on to dominate. They took 5 of their first 7 games, accumulating 10 points. With fourteen points in fourteen games, the Delhi Capitals finished sixth.

            In the 2017 IPL, Delhi Capitals lost the first game to RCB but took the next two against RPS and KXIP. They then went on to lose five games in a row. They rebounded, however, by winning two games against with the SRH and GL. Moreover, the Delhi Capitals were defeated by MI. The Delhi Capitals finished the season in sixth place, with 6 wins and 8 defeats.

            In the 2018 IPL season, Delhi Capitals ended up lasting at the bottom of the table. The Delhi Capitals played fourteen matches and won only 5 matches and lost 9 matches.

            In the 2019 IPL season, the Delhi Capitals began their victory by defeating MI. The Delhi Capitals made the playoffs for the first time in seven years, defeating the SRH in the first round. They lost the second match against the CSK and finished as the playoffs second runner-up.

            In the 2020 IPL season, the Delhi Capitals won 7 out of the first 9 games. However, they lost next 4 matches in a row, but by defeating RCB in the last match, Capitals finished on the second position. In addition, a victory over SRH in Qualifier 2 helped them reach the IPL finals for the first time in IPL history. They were defeated in the finals by the MI. It was also the most successful session in IPL history for the Delhi Capitals.
