The ICC World Twenty was latterly named ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. International Cricket Council (ICC) has all the rights to perform the tournaments. ICC is an International Organisation that looks after the management and smooth conduct of tournaments under its governance.
It is played in 20-20 format. Initially, the T20 series was started and adopted by the English Cricket Board. Their matches started attracting more and more crowd with a large audience. The T20 format started gaining huge popularity and huge crowd and, due to this, many other cricket boards started adopting this format.
A total of sixteen teams participated in the T20 tournament. In 2007, the first T20 World Cup was played and in 2016 the latest T20 edition was played and West Indies won the Series.
The Tournament was conducted every two years from the beginning, but after the 2016 tournament, the ICC members conducted it in 2020, which was after four years. Because of the major effect of Covid-19 all around the world, the T20 World Cup tournament could not take place.
The tournament has been postponed to 2021 and 2022 and also the host country has also been changed from Australia to India. The 2021 series will be hosted by India whereas Australia will host the 2022 series. After, the 2016 series ICC once organized the tournament in 2018 and South Africa was the host.
They finally decided in 2017 that Australia will host the T20 World Cup in 2020. Every countryman who takes part for themselves and for their Nation has the motive of achieving a good record and making their Nation proud. Cricket is all about teamwork and coordination amongst each other.
ICC T20 World Cup: History
In England Benson & Hedges series was played. In 2002, when the Benson & Hedges series got finished, the cricket board of England needed another tournament, which could fill its space. The England cricket board members needed the tournament, which could increase its popularity and can attract a huge crowd, which will cause more sponsorships.
When the T20 format matches were introduced, only English teams used to take part and soon the matches amongst English teams started attracting more and more audiences. There was a first match between Middlesex and Surrey in 2004, in which the total attendance was around 29,509. It was the largest number of fans gathered ever in any Country Cricket tournament.
After that, many other cricket boards adopted this T20 format and gathered more and more unexpected crowds and popularity. The tournament was started with lesser teams, but as it gained popularity, the number of teams also increased. In the 2014 tournament, there were sixteen teams participated.
Mr. Stuart Robertson was the Manager of the English cricket board and he decided to introduce the 20 over per innings game to the chairmen. This proposal was given in 2001 and for its approval, elections were conducted and voted 11-7 and the new format came into existence.
Format of Tournament
There are 10 teams in this format that are already qualified and the other remaining teams get qualifications based on a qualification match. There are many factors by which the teams are ranked whether it’s the highest number of wins, the highest number of points, the highest net run rates, and also if the match gets tied, then the super over decides the winner.
This applies in all the forms of tournaments and has been implemented during the 2009 tournament. Earlier, when they started in 2007, it was stated to be held every two years, but later, after the 2016 tournament, the ICC members hosted it after every four years.
Each player comes to the field, whether it’s a batsman, all-rounder, or bowler with full confidence and good presence of mind. They play it in 20-20 over format. It is the shortest format where one can prove themselves.
The International Cricket Council conducts the bid amongst the nation, who shows a keen interest in conducting the Cricket World Cup. Then ICC configures the bid and decides the Host Country. South Africa was Hosted in 2007, England in 2009, Bangladesh hosted West Indies in 2010, 2012 hosted by Sri Lanka, and India hosted the latest tournament in 2016.
In the year 2015, Tim Anderson ICC’s head of Development Globally suggested that the United States can also be a host in the future. In, comparison to the other tournament hosted in the United States such as baseball.
The United States and West Indies showed interest in 2020, for co-hosting the T20 world cup after 2023. And also Malaysia got interested and could be a contender.

South Africa hosted the inaugural match in 2007, and India won the edition. England hosted the 2009 edition and won by Pakistan. The 2010 edition was played in West Indies and won by England. Sri Lanka hosted the 2012 edition and the West Indies won the series.
India was the host in 2016, and West Indies won the tournament. West Indies won the tournament twice. Mahela Jayawardene (1016 runs have scored most Tournament Runs till the latest series). Shahid Afridi has taken most Tournament Wickets (39) and runs. West Indies won the T20 World Cup title twice in total 6 tournaments played.
These all records made by the individuals are regarded as its best and given the awards for the same so that they should really feel the confidence in them with more and more zeal for the future matches. This presentation keeps players motivated and respectful.
Many other players have worked really hard and their hard work has made their names famous worldwide. There would have been new records in front of us, but because of Covid-19, the tournament could not take place and get postponed.
The 2020 edition T20 world cup series was originally hosted by Australia in the next year 2021, and India originally hosted, whereas the 2021 edition T20 world cup series in 2022. Further, the decision was changed and now India will host the 2021 edition and Australia will host the 2022 edition.
