The Punjab Kings (PBKS) earlier known as Punjab Super Kings (PBSK) is an IPL franchise cricket team of Punjab. The Punjab team was purchased by Mohit Burman of the Dabur Group (46%), Ness Wadia of the Wadia Group (23%), Preity Zinta (23%), and Saptarshi Dey of the Dey & Dey Group (23%). To buy the franchise, the company invested a total of $76 million.
The team was previously known as the Kings XI Punjab. The franchise’s tributaries as the Kings XI Punjab were the states of Kashmir, Jammu, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, and Haryana, as shown by the letter series “K J H P H” in the team’s logo’s banner.
In February 2021, the squad was renamed Punjab Kings from Kings XI Punjab. The team name was changed from Kings XI Punjab to Punjab Kings in February 2021.
Following the uproar involving the BCCI and Lalit Modi in 2010, the Indian Premier League declared on 10 October 2010 that the franchise contracts of Kings XI Punjab and Rajasthan Royals have been terminated.
The teams revealed that they will go to court in order to stay in the Indian Premier League. The High Court was involved in the reinstatement of Kings XI Punjab.
The home ground of the Punjab Kings (PBKS) is the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) stadium located in Mohali. The PCA stadium has a capacity of 28,000 seating. Since 2010, they have also played some of their home games in Dharamsala or Indore.

In 2014, the Punjab Kings played as the Kings XI Punjab in the Champions League Twenty20, emerging as semi-finalists.
Punjab Kings IPL Journey
The Punjab kings got off to a poor start in the 2008 IPL season, losing their first two games. However, Kumar Sangakkara’s unbeaten 94-run innings helped Punjab Kings win the third game. The Punjab Kings found its rhythm. The team won nine of its next ten matches, attributable to a well-balanced bowling lineup and an effective top order.
The Punjab Kings got the place in the semi-finals and faced the Rajasthan Royals (RR) and lost the match. And in the second semi-final match, the Punjab Kings faced the Chennai Super Kings and scored 112/8 in 20 overs.
The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) chased down the target due to the unbeaten half-centuries scored by Parthiv Patel and Suresh Raina and won the match by 9 wickets with 31 balls remaining.
In the 2009 IPL season, the Punjab Kings encountered terrible losses against the Delhi Daredevils (now known as the Delhi Capitals) and the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) but bounced back with victories over the Royal Challengers Banglore (RCB), Rajasthan Royals (RR), and Mumbai Indians (MI).
The Punjab Kings, at that point, went on a sliding outing in their next eight matches, winning four matches and losing four matches. After losing to the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in their previous match, the team’s semi-final hopes were dashed. The Punjab Kings positioned in fifth place.
In the 2010 IPL season, the Punjab Kings encountered a miserable season. The Punjab Kings lost six matches to the RCB, DC (now known as SRH), RR, and MI. In the next match, Punjab faced Chennai and won the match in the super over. However, the Punjab Kings positioned last in the table.
In the 2011 IPL season, Punjab Kings had a good comeback from the last miserable season. Punjab Kings played fourteen matches and won seven games and lost seven matches. However, Punjab Kings by two points lost out on the playoffs, and positioned fifth in the table.
Punjab Kings finished sixth in the table overall in the 2012 IPL season, winning eight of sixteen matches.
In the 2013 IPL season, Punjab Kings won the first match against Pune Warriors India, by 8 wickets. And lost their next two matches. Punjab won their third match and again lost the fourth match. But due to David Miller’s unbeaten 80* off 41 balls, Punjab won against Pune warriors India.
In their eleventh match, Punjab had a great win by chasing down the target 190 set by Royal Challengers Bangalore, thanks to David Miller’s unbeaten century 101* off 38 balls. However, Punjab Kings failed to qualify for the play-offs.
Punjab Kings started the 2014 IPL season by winning their first five consecutive games. This helped Punjab Kings to easily qualify in to the playoffs. Punjab Kings qualified to the finals due to Virender Sehwag’s 122-run knock against the Chennai Super Kings in the semifinal.
And in the finals, Punjab Kings faced the Kolkata Knight Riders, where Punjab batted first and set a good target of 199 owing to Wriddhiman Saha’s 115. Kolkata Knight Riders were able to win the final by three wickets in the final over of the match owing to Manish Pandey’s 94 off 50 balls and his teammate’s steady fast strike rate, including Piyush Chawla’s 13 off five balls. And Punjab Kings positioned second in the 2014 IPL season.
In the 2015 IPL edition, Punjab Kings played fourteen matches and won only three matches which led the team position last in the table. In this IPL season, David Miller ended as the leading run-scorer of 357 runs, and Anureet Singh ended as the leading wicket-taker of 15 wickets.
And again in the 2016 IPL season, Punjab positioned last due to losing ten of fourteen matches played. Murali Vijay scored the most runs (453), while Sandeep Sharma took the most wickets (15).
In the 2017 IPL season, Punjab Kings played 14 matches and won 7 matches and positioned fifth place. And in the 2018 season, they won only 6 of 14 matches and positioned seventh place. In 2019 and 2020, they ended up in the sixth position.
