This series is played between India and Australia. It is played in test series format. The tournaments are organised and totally managed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). It is an organisation that has the rights to govern Cricket in India, under the supervision of the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports and in the supervision of Australian cricket. In 1996-1997, the first edition was played, and it resulted in a win for India.  

The two Legends – Allan Border from Australia and Sunil Gavaskar from India. These two names have been very popular in their time for creating a historical record in the game of cricket. Giving those legends a Tribute by naming the series by their name. Australia was the only country to tour India just after independence.

Top 10 batsman in Border Gavaskar Trophy

1. Sachin Tendulkar

Sachin Tendulkar is a well-known Indian cricketer. Sachin Tendulkar is popularly known as Master Blaster. He has been always known for scoring the maximum number of runs. He played the Border Gavaskar tournament between the span of 1996 to 2013. He played a total of 34 matches and 65 innings and made the highest 3262 runs.

He has been always very impressed with his batting performance. In his Border Gavaskar Trophy, he scored 9 centuries and 16 half centuries. His individual highest score is 241 runs that too not out.

2. Ricky Ponting

Ricky Ponting is an Australian player and a very good Batsman as well as a brilliant fielder. He has not only made recorded as a fielder but also with his bat too. He played the Border Gavaskar tournament between the span of 1996-2012. He played a total of 29 matches and been part of 51 innings and made 2555 runs.

Ricky Ponting has the highest individual score of 257 runs. In his Border Gavaskar Trophy career, he knocked 8 centuries and 12 half centuries. He has been a finest player of the Australian team.

3. VVS Laxman

VVS Laxman is an Indian Cricketer and now is serving as a very good mentor for the young cricketers as well as a good commentator. Has been part of Border Gavaskar trophy tournament from 1998 to 2012. He has played 29 matches and been part of 54 innings and made 2434 runs with a decent strike rate. In his Border Gavaskar Trophy career, he scored 6 centuries and 12 half-centuries. His best individual highest score is 281 runs.

4. Rahul Dravid

Rahul Dravid is an Indian cricketer. He is one of the most talented and decent cricketers in the history of cricket. He has played the Border Gavaskar trophy tournament from 1996 to 2012. He has played a total of 32 match and 60 innings and scored 2143 runs.

His highest individual score is 233 runs. In his career, he scored 2 centuries and 13 half-centuries. He is the Coach of the under-19 cricket team and also in his mentorship under-19 cricket team won the world cup.

5. Michael Clarke

Michael Clarke is an Australian cricketer and commentator. He is one of the best batsmen in the Australian line-up. Michael Clarke was part of the Border Gavaskar Trophy tournament from 2004 and played till 2014. He played a total of 22 matches and 40 innings and made 2049 runs. His highest individual total runs are 329 not out.

It is one of the highest runs amongst all other world-class batsmen. In his Border Gavaskar Trophy career, he scored 7 centuries and 6 half-centuries. Michael Clarke was also a great Australia captain.

6. Cheteshwar Pujara

Cheteshwar Pujara is an Indian Cricketer and a test specialist. He is a right-hand batsman, and he plays test match brilliantly. He has been part of Border Gavaskar Trophy tournament from 2010 and continues playing till 2021. He played 20 matches and been part of 37 innings.

His highest individual runs scored is 1893. Cheteshwar Pujara is a very experienced player. In his Border Gavaskar Trophy career he has scored 5 centuries and 10 half centuries.

7. Matthew Hayden

Matthew Hayden is an Australian left arm Batsman. He is a powerful batsman in the Australian lineup in all the format of cricket. He has played the Border Gavaskar Trophy tournament from 2001 to 2008. He played 18 matches and 35 innings and scored 1888 runs.

In a short span of the journey, he scored and contributed very well. His highest individual score is 203 runs. In his Border Gavaskar Trophy career he scored 6 centuries and 8 half centuries. He was the most aggressive player of his time.

8. Steve Smith

Steve Smith is an Australian cricketer and was also a former captain of the Australian team. Steve Smith played the first Border Gavaskar Trophy tournament in 2013 and he is to continue playing the tournament. He has played total 14 matches and been part of 28 innings and made 1742 runs.

He is one of the best test player in the Australian cricket and also his skill are compared with Donald Bradman. Donald was also a brilliantly skilled cricketer in his times. So far, he scored 8 centuries and 5 half centuries.

9. Virendra Sehwag

Virender Sehwag is an Indian cricketer and specially comes as an opener. He is a Right Arm Batsmen and sometimes also balls Right Arm Off Spin. He has been playing Border Gavaskar Trophy tournament from 2003 and played till 2013. He has played 22 matches and been part of 43 innings and scored 1738 runs.

His highest individual score is 1738 runs. In his career, he scored 3 centuries and 9 Half centuries. Virender Sehwag has been always known for his record making innings.

10. Virat Kohli

Virat Kohli is an Indian Cricketer and currently captain of team India. He is also known as the Run Machine. He scores the runs with a good strike rate. He is playing in the Border Gavaskar Trophy tournament since 2011 and currently played till 2020.

He has played 20 matches and 36 innings and scored 1682 runs. His highest individual score is 169 runs. In his Border Gavaskar Trophy career, he had scored 7 Centuries and 5 Half Centuries.
