In 1998, ICC changed the name of Knockout Tournament to Champions Trophy. It is played in 50- over format. The first tournament was played in 1998and was continued to be played and held after every alternative year. But the format of the Champions Trophy gradually kept changing over the period of time. 

Since the beginnings of the tournament in 2009& till the present, it is been played every fourth coming year. England & Wales hosted the latest edition in 2017. 

The current champions are Pakistan. International Cricket Council (ICC) has all the rights to perform the tournaments. ICC is an International Organisation that looks after the management and smooth conduct of tournaments under their Governance. This is a One Day International (ODI) format. 

Top 10 Batsmen in ICC Champions Trophy

1. Chris Gayle

Chris Gayle is popularly known as Universe Boss, plays for West Indies. He is known for hitting huge sixes. He had played the Champions Trophy from 2002 to 2013. He had played 17 matches and 17 innings. He scored maximum 791 runs and remains in top of the list and he is the only Caribbean player to score maximum runs.

Chris Gayle most often opens the innings and if he retains on the pitch for longer time, than the opponent bowlers are generally smashed like anything. All the bowlers initially want his wickets very early. His individual highest score is 133 that too not out.

2. Mahela Jayawardene

Mahela Jayawardene is a Sri Lankan right-hand batsman. He was also the captain of the Sri Lankan team. He has started playing the Champions Trophy tournament in 2000 and played till 2013. During his captaincy, he took his team to a much better stage. He scored a total of 742 runs and grabs the second top position in the list. His highest individual score is 84 not out.

3. Shikher Dhawan

Shikhar Dhawan is an Indian Left-handed batsman. He carries a good personality in himself. He has started playing the ICC Champions Trophy in 2013 and the latest played by 2017. He plays in all the cricket format and always opens the innings. He has played a total of 10 matches and 10 innings.

He is a very good batsman and known for scoring big. He has scored a total of 701 runs. He is the only Indian cricketer to bag this record. Shikhar Dhawan is very impressive with his bat. His highest individual score is 125 runs.

4. Kumar Sangakkara

Kumar Sangakkara is a Sri Lankan left-handed batsman. He is a top-order batsman and his main role is behind the wickets. He has played his first ICC Champions Trophy tournament in 2000 and the latest played in 2013. He is a wonderful batsman in all the cricket format.

He has scored a total of 683 runs in his Champions Trophy Career. He is not only good with his batting skills but also he is very impressed with his Wicket Keeping skills. His highest individual score is 134 runs not out.

5. Sourav Ganguly

Sourav Ganguly is an Indian left-handed batsman. He is one of the best known multi-talented cricketers of his times. He has played the first ICC Champions Trophy in 1998 and played till 2004. During his captaincy, he made team India a very strong and bold team. Sourav Ganguly is also considered one of the most successful captains of his times.

He played a total of 13 matches and 11 innings and knocked 665 runs. He was a fast machine in scoring the runs. His highest individual score is 141 runs that too not out.

6. Jacques Kallis

Jacques Kallis is a South African right-handed batsman. He is also known for his best all-rounder performance. He carries a great personality in himself. Kallis started playing the ICC Champions Trophy in 1998 and played till 2009. His batting as well as bowling, both well too impressive and one of the best in the South African line up.

He played total 17 matches and 17 innings and made total 653 runs. He is one of the highest runs getter from South Africa team. His highest individual score is 653 runs. He is currently the Coach of South Africa team.

7. Rahul Dravid

Rahul Dravid is an Indian right-handed batsman. He is one of the most talented and famous personality cricketers in the history of cricket. He started playing the ICC Champions Trophy in the year 1998 and played till 2009. He played a total of 19 matches and been part of 15 innings and knocked a maximum of 627 runs.

His highest individual score is 76 runs. Rahul Dravid these days after his retirement is giving coaching to the Under 19 Cricket team and also in his presence the Under 19 team won the World Cup.

8. Ricky Ponting

Ricky Ponting is an Australian Right-handed batsman. His performance with the bat is quite awesome, but also his fielding skills are too good. In cricket history, he didn’t make the records only with bat, but also in the fielding department. He was also the captain of the Australian Team. He started playing his ICC Champion Trophy Tournament in 1998 and played till 2009.

He played a total of 18 matches and 18 innings and made a total of 593 runs. He is the first Australian cricketer to make the maximum runs. His highest individual score is 111 runs not out.

9. Shivnarine Chanderpaul

Shivnarine Chanderpaul is a Sri Lankan left-handed batsman. He was one of the best Caribbean cricketers. He is known for his excellent batting performance. He first played his ICC Champions Trophy tournament in 1998 and played till 2006. He played a total of 16 matches and 16 innings and made 587 runs. He is the second Caribbean cricketer after Chris Gayle to bag the record. His highest individual score is 74 runs.

10. Sanath Jayasuriya

Sanath Jayasuriya is a Sri Lankan left-handed batsman. He was also the captain of the Sri Lankan team. Jayasurya was considered as the best-attacking batsmen and best all-rounder performance. He played total of 20 matches and made 536 runs. His highest individual score is 102 runs not out.
