This series is played between India and Australia. It is played in test series format. The tournaments are managed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). It is an organisation that has the rights to govern Cricket in India, under the supervision of the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports and in the supervision of Australian cricket. In 1996-1997, the first edition was played, and it resulted in a win for India.  

The two Legends- Allan Border from Australia and Sunil Gavaskar from India. These two names have been very popular in their time for creating a historical record in the game of cricket. Giving those legends a Tribute by naming the series by their name. Australia was the only country to tour India just after independence.

Top 10 fielder in Border Gavaskar Trophy

1. Rahul Dravid

Rahul Dravid is a well-known cricketer and currently he is a Head Coach of India Under 19 team. He is handling and mentoring the young team very well and even under his coaching, Under 19 won the world cup. He has been playing the Border Gavaskar Trophy tournament from 1996 and played till 2012. He played 164 matches and 301 innings and took 210 catches and recorded his name in the top of the list. He is a very brilliant cricketer in the Indian line-up.

2. Ricky Ponting

Ricky Ponting is an Australian Cricketer and very well known for his fielding performance. He is not only good with his bat but also undoubtedly he is a brilliant bowler. He started playing his Border Gavaskar Trophy tournaments in 1996 and played till 2012. During his career, he played well and made good recorded, which puts a huge impact on the upcoming Australian cricketers. He played 168 matches and been part of 328 innings and took 196 catches and bags the second spot in the top list.

3. Mark Waugh

Mark Waugh is an Australian cricketer and commentator. He played in all the formats of cricket and also made wonderful records. He is not only known for his batting and bowling but also he is a very special fielder. Dives, catch and quick run-outs were his key points. His Border Gavaskar Trophy series started in 1996 and ended up in 2002. During his test career, he made wonderful records and made his team proud. He played a total of 128 matches and 245 innings and took 181 catches. As he is the oldest player but still holds a record and stood 3rd in the list.

4. Mark Taylor

Mark Taylor is an Australian Cricketer. Currently, he is serving as Director for Australian Cricket and a Commentator. He is among the best fielder in the history of test cricket. His best fielding position is on the first slip. His Test career started in 1996 and ended up in 1999 and in between from 1994 to 1999 he was a captain. He played total 104 matches and been part of 197 innings and took 157 catches. His catching skills were really awesome and whenever ball come to his hand, just gets stick to it and loses the catch.

5. Steve Smith

Steve Smith is an Australian Cricketer. Whether it’s limited over or the test cricket, he is the legend of the game in every sense. He was also the Captain of the Australian team. Smith played a total of 77 test matches and 147 innings, which includes great knocks and great catches as well. He took a total of 123 catches. He was considered as one of the finest players and known for giving a phenomenal performance by the bat as well as on the field.

6. VVS Laxman

VVS Laxman is an Indian cricketer and a middle-order test by batsmen. He plays beautiful strokes with the bat, but along with it is an excellent fielder too. Undoubtedly he was very quick on the field, whether it’s the run outs, catches or around the boundary ropes. He started playing the Border Gavaskar Trophy tournaments in 1996 and played till 2012. During his test journey he achieved many rewards and awards both. He played 134 matches and took total 135 catches.

7. Michael Clarke

Michael Clarke is another Australian cricketer who represented Australia in test matches from2004 to 2015. Michael was considered as one of the best fielders in the slip ever and also holds the record of taking most catches for his side as a non-wicket keeper. He played total 115 matches and 223 innings and took 134 catches. He began his career as an all-rounder and later he was only focusing on batting and improved too and sometime he came as an opening batsman for Australia.

8. Mathew Hayden

Matthew Hayden is an Australian Cricketer. Matthew Hayden is reckoned as a classy batsman of all times and also Australian players pay him tribute as a best fielder. He was part of Border Gavaskar Trophy tournament from 1996 and played till 2009. Matthew Hayden played 103 matches and 205 innings and took 128 catches. He was considered as a best all-rounder and a good asset to his team. He has a best ability to score quickly in all the formats.

9. Sachin Tendulkar

Sachin Tendulkar is an Indian Cricketer. During the time period of 1996- 2000, he was the captain of the Indian team and also it was considered the most successful period for the Indian team. He was the most efficient fielder, especially on the slips and takes fantastic catches. He played total of 200 matches and 366 innings and took 115 catches.

10. Ajinkya Rahane

Ajinkya Rahane is an Indian Cricketer. He is a very decent cricketer, and he is also a Vice-Captain of an Indian team in test cricket. His journey to Border Gavaskar Trophy started in 2013 and he is still part of the tournament. He played total 73 matches and 140 innings and took 95 catches. Other than fielding he a very good batsmen and holds the innings very well. He usually fields on the slip position and it is his strong zone.
