The Ashes are mainly known for the Test matches. In 1882, it was first played between England and Australia, only these two countries are part of this Ashes series. If the series ended as a draw then the team that most recently won the series are regarded by the Ashes. It is played in a Test Cricket format. International Cricket Council (ICC) has all the rights to perform & manage the tournaments. ICC is an International Organisation that looks after the management and smooth conduct of tournaments under their Governance. 

It is a five match series Tournament. The latest Ashes series was played in 2019 and the series score went 2-2, in which England levelled the series after beating Australia in final test. In this format, if the series gets draw, the team which is currently holding the Ashes retains the trophy.

1. England Tour of Australia in 1928

In the England Tour of Australia, which was played in Brisbane in 1928. England came out to bat and with the help of the opening partnership and the brilliant performance by Patsy Hendren of 169 runs help England to reach a total of 521 runs. Where Australia came out to chase and didn’t get a good start and lost early wickets and the whole team got all out at 122 runs.

In the second innings of England, there was again a small partnership being made and finally helped the team to build the total of 342 runs and England declared the innings, then Australia came out to chase it finally and this time the whole team was back to pavilion very early and only scored 66 runs.  

2. Australian tour of England in 1938

In the Australian tour of England in 1938, England was in intense form and made a historical victory over Australia. England in their first innings scored a total of 903 runs and declared the innings, in which Leonard Hutton alone score 364 runs. When the Australian team came out to chase and the opener Bill Brown scored 69 runs and no Australian player performed well and at last, they were all in 201.

In the continuation of the innings Australia again came out to bat and to chase the total given by England, but the same happened again and Australia got all out for 123 runs and England won the series by an innings and 579 runs.

3. Australian tour of England in 1934

In the Australian tour of England which was played at The Oval in London in 1934. Australia started the innings wonderfully and the massive partnership between Bill Ponsford and Donald Bradman of 510 runs and individually 266 and 244 runs respectively and totally came out to 701 runs. England came out to chase and the only person to score a century was Maurice Leyland 110 runs and little contribution by every player and reached the total of 321 runs.

Australia came out to bat again in their second and Donald Bradman scored 77 runs and Stan Mc Cabe scored 70 runs and reached 327 runs and finally, England came to chase 708 runs and lost early wickets and the whole team got all out at 145 runs and Australia won by 562 runs.

4. Australian tour of England in 1948

In the Australian tour of England, played at The Lords in 1948. Where Australia hampered the first innings with 350 runs in which Arthur Morris scored the maximum of 105 runs and England came out to bat and was just able to score a total of 215 runs and go all out.

Australian in their second innings Sid Barnes scored 141 runs and the total score went to460 and they declared the innings and in the last innings by England in which they need to chase 596 runs and they only managed to get 186 runs and Australian won by 409 runs.

5. Australia tour of England in 2015

In the Australia tour of England in 2015. Australia started the innings and the opener Chris Rogers scored 173 runs and Steven Smith scored 215 and took the total to 566 runs declared the innings. Whereas England came out to chase and Alastair Cook and Ben Stokes played and tried their best to get the lead but the whole team got all out at 312 runs.

Australia in their second innings had a good opening partnership and managed to score a total of 254 runs and Now England needed 509 runs, in which they only scored 103 runs and got all out and Australia won by 405 runs.

Australia opened the innings Matthew Hayden scored 197 runs and Ricky Ponting scored 123 runs and lead the team to total 492 runs, then England came to chase and got a really good start and was just reaching the target but Australian bowlers didn’t allow them and the team got all out at 35 runs.

Australian came out into second innings and Matthew Hayden was just unstoppable and scored massive 103 runs and took the team to 296 runs and declared the innings. England needed 464 runs and started losing early wickets and just scored 79 runs and Australia won the match by 384 runs.

7. England tour of Australia in 1895

In England tour of Australia in 1895, which was played at Adelaide. Older ashes matches are the real thriller. Australia batting in the first innings and Harry Trott made 48 and George Giffen scored 58 and not much more partnership by anyone and lead the team to total 238 runs and then England came out to bat and lost the wickets very early and could only make 124 runs.

Then, Australia came and Frank Iredale scored massive 140 runs and took the team to a total of 411 runs now England needed 526 runs to win and the team got all put on 143 runs and Australia won it by 382 runs.

8. England tour of Australia in 2013

In the England tour of Australia, played in Brisbane in the year 2013. Australia came out to bat first and surprisingly low order batsmen played well Brad Haddin scored 94 runs and Mitchell Johnson scored 64 and took the team to 295 runs and then England came out to chase and not much partnership formed and only achieved 136 runs.

In the second innings, the Australia partnership between David Warner and Michael Clark of 237 runs made it to reach a total of 401 runs. England needed 561 runs to win but could only make 179 and the whole team got all put and Australia won it by 381 runs.

9. England tour of Australia in 1920

In 1920, England went to Australia for its Ashes Series, played in Sydney. Australia came out to bat first and a small partnership by every player helped the team to reach the total of 267 runs and then England came to chase it and was playing very well but kept losing wickets too and reached 190 runs.

In the second inning Australia thrashed the England bowlers and build a massive score of 581 and now England needed 659 runs to win and it was looking impossible for them and somehow managed to score 281 and Australia won it by 377 runs.

10. England tour of Australia in 1937

In the England tour of Australia in 1937, which was played in Melbourne. Australia started the innings and scored 200 runs with the loss of 9 wickets and declared the innings, then it was England’s turn to chase and they only made 76 runs and go all out. In the second innings of Australia, it became more interesting, Jack Fingleton scored 136 runs and Donald Bradman scored massive 270 runs and the total became 564 runs.

Now England needed 689 runs and Maurice Leyland played a wonderful inning of 111 runs not out and the total score reaches 323 runs, but Australia won it by 365 runs.
