The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) is a franchise cricket team representing the city of Kolkata in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The Kolkata squad was subsequently purchased by Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan‘s company Red Chilies’ Entertainment in collaboration with actress Juhi Chawla and her husband Jay Mehta for $75.09 million, which was roughly 2.98 billion at the time.

The team’s name is a reference to the iconic 1980s American television series Knight Rider. The Eden Gardens is an iconic stadium in India and also a home venue of IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders.

The Eden Gardens is owned by the Cricket Association of Bengal. It was the largest cricket stadium in India and had a seating capacity of over 90,000.

In 2011, the stadium was upgraded to meet the International Cricket Council‘s requirements for the 2011 Cricket World Cup, limiting its capacity to about 68,000.

Kolkata Knight Riders Sponsors             

            Nokia was the Kolkata Knight Riders’ official primary sponsor and continued as their primary sponsor until 2014. Gionee, a Chinese mobile phone maker, became their primary sponsor in 2015, signing a three-year contract worth 540 million (US$7.6 million).

In 2018, Nokia returned as the main sponsor of the Knight Riders, signing a two-year deal. Star Plus, Reebok, HDIL, Kit Kat, SB Nation, Doublemint, SAP AG, Asian Paints, Red FM 93.5, The Telegraph, Seiko. The principal sponsor (present) of the Kolkata Knight Riders is MPL (Mobile Premier League). 

The official sponsors are the Reliance Jio, Lux Cozi, TV9 Bharatvarsh, Astral pipes, RR Kabel, Colgate, Wrogn, Unacademy, and the Pentonic.

The official partners of the team are Kotak Mahindra Bank, Kingfisher Calendar, BKT Tyre, MIO Amore, and Amul Kool.

The Merchandise partners are Bwakoof.com, Boat Audio, CRICFIG, Gully, The Arena, and the Soled Store.

Kolkata Knight Riders IPL Journey

            In the 2008 IPL season, the Kolkata Knight Riders played fourteen matches and won six matches and lost seven of the matches and one of the match is not resulted. The Kolkata Knight Riders has a win percentage of 46.16% and positioned to be in the sixth place in the 2008 IPL edition.

In the 2008 IPL season, Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bangalore started the inaugural match, in which Kolkata Knight Riders won by 140 runs due to an unbeaten century of Brendon McCullum (158* off just 73 balls).

            In the 2009 IPL season, Kolkata Knight Riders again finished the season miserably. Kolkata Knight Riders faced the Royal Challengers Bangalore twice but lost both times.

The second time when Kolkata met Royals, the Royals batsman Ross Taylor scored an unbeaten 81* off 33 balls to help the Royals win by 6 wickets. Kolkata Knight Riders played 14 matches and won only 3 and lost 7 of the matches and one does not result. They have a win percentage of just 23.07% and positioned last in the table.

            In the 2010 IPL season, the Kolkata Knight Riders played fourteen matches and won 7 matches and lost 7 matches. They have a win percentage of 50% and positioned in sixth place in the table. The Mumbai Indians swept Kolkata Knight Riders in all four games in the first two seasons of the IPL. Kolkata did not defeat Mumbai until the 2010 IPL season.

            The Kolkata Knight Riders made the playoffs for the first time in the 2011 IPL season. The Kolkata Knight Riders faced the Mumbai Indians. Mumbai Indians won the match by four wickets. Kolkata Knight Riders played fifteen matches and won eight matches and lost seven of the matches and positioned in fourth place on the table. Kolkata Knight Riders have a win percentage of 53.33% in the 2011 IPL season.

            In the 2012 IPL season, Kolkata Knight Riders played eighteen matches and won twelve matches and lost only five of the matches and one match is not registered. In the playoffs, Kolkata Knight Riders defeated Mumbai Indians by scoring a total of 140/7 in 20 overs and limiting Mumbai to 108 runs.

In the finals Kolkata faced the Chennai Super Kings, Chennai batted first and scored 190/3. Kolkata chased down the target by six wickets. This led Kolkata Knight Riders to lift the IPL title for the first time. Manvinder Bisla delivered a standout display as Kolkata Knight Riders snatched the IPL trophy from the hands of Chennai Super Kings.

            In the 2013 IPL season, Kolkata Knight Riders lost its form and positioned seventh place in the table. Kolkata Knight Riders played sixteen matches and won only six matches and lost ten matches.

            In the 2014 IPL season, Kolkata Knight Riders came back into the form and lifted the IPL title for the second time. Kolkata played the final match against Kings XI Punjab, Punjab batted first and scored 199/4, Wriddhiman Saha has scored 115* off 55 balls. Kolkata has chased the score and won by 3 wickets, Manish Pandey scored an unbeaten 94 off 54 balls. Manish Pandey is named Man of the Match.

            In the 2017 and 2018 IPL season’s Kolkata ended up positioning in third place at the table and in the 2019 and 2020 edition of IPL Kolkata ended up positioning in fifth place in the table.
